Emails Are A Superpower

If you’ve been neglecting your email list, this episode of Marketing vs The World is going to change your mind. I sat down with Jamie Woodbridge, co-founder of The Inbox Club, to talk about all things email marketing, newsletters, audience building, and why email deserves a top spot in your marketing mix.

Why Email Matters More Than Ever

Jamie kicked off by sharing why he’s so passionate about email, saying "Email has a really solid place in the marketing mix."

And he’s right. There are 4.5 billion monthly active email users worldwide - more than any social platform, even if you combine several together. That’s a huge opportunity for brands to reach their audience directly.

Unlike social, where you’re at the mercy of algorithms, the inbox is personal. Subscribers choose to let you in. That’s personal. And powerful.

"The inbox is a private space. You’ve been given explicit permission to land there. That makes every message more powerful."

If you’re looking for a safe, scalable channel that delivers reliable results, email needs to be part of your strategy.

Catch more of Jamie’s insights into why email is worth your time in the full episode.

Why Building an Email List Protects Your Business

Social media is unpredictable. SEO gets harder every day. Paid ads are getting more expensive. But email? That’s where you own your audience.

Jamie calls it “ring-fencing your audience” - creating a safe, reliable channel where you can connect without relying on anyone else’s platform. Investors love it. Buyers value it. And your future self will thank you for it.

"Until we convert people into subscribers, we don’t own that audience. We're borrowing it from LinkedIn, Instagram, or Meta. Once they're on your list, that’s a business asset."

An owned audience means:

  • You’re less vulnerable to algorithm changes.

  • You can communicate whenever you want.

  • You can build deeper relationships with your best customers.

And yes, investors and buyers see your email list as real business value, too.

What Makes a Great Email Strategy

It’s easy to send an email. It’s much harder to make it work.

"How you manage, segment, and nurture your audience matters more than the design or copy." According to Jamie, 80% of great email marketing is about your data.

Segment, Don’t Spray and Pray

Email isn’t a one-size-fits-all channel. The days of sending one generic email to everyone are over. Jamie recommends:

  • For ecommerce brands: Group subscribers based on behaviour. Who browsed but didn’t buy? Who’s already purchased? Segment based on product interest and buying stage.

  • For B2B brands: Even basic segmentation helps. Separate clients, prospects, ex-clients, and suppliers. A few personalised tweaks in your messaging make a big difference.

Build a Reputation for Value

Your subscribers need to feel like opening your emails is worth it. That means sharing insights, updates, or offers that genuinely benefit them. Over time, you’ll build trust - and when you do that, engagement skyrockets.

Picking the Right Email Platform

"Pick a platform based on what you need to achieve, not what's trendy." Jamie suggests focusing on what matters most for your business:

  • Ecommerce brands: Klaviyo, Omnisend, Dotdigital

  • B2B newsletters: Beehiv, ConvertKit, MailerLite

  • All-rounders: Mailchimp, Brevo, Campaign Monitor

Don’t overcomplicate things. A platform that supports your segmentation and automation needs (without unnecessary features) is usually the best fit.

Why Newsletters Are a Superpower

"‘Newsletter’ is a rubbish word. These are letters, not just news." Jamie’s approach is simple: your newsletter should feel personal, valuable, and worth opening.

Too many brands treat newsletters as a dumping ground for updates and blog links. But when done well, newsletters can:

  • Establish authority and expertise.

  • Build stronger relationships with your audience.

  • Share genuinely useful content.

  • Turn casual subscribers into loyal superfans.

The Role of Content: What Works Now

"Nothing jars people more than receiving marketing messages that don’t resonate." Email works when it feels tailored, relevant, and helpful.

Right now, Jamie’s seeing different approaches succeed:

  • For B2B brands: Long-form, value-packed content is working brilliantly.

  • For B2C brands: More frequent, visual-led campaigns can drive big results — but only if they’re properly segmented.

  • For everyone: Mix up your formats. Try plain-text sends, short snappy promos, videos, and in-depth guides depending on your goals.

And above all? Test everything. No two audiences are the same.

How to Make Money from Your Newsletter

This part of the episode really got us thinking differently about email.

"You can monetise newsletters in more ways than you think." Beyond just promoting your products, Jamie explains three ways to generate revenue:

  1. Sell your services or products - the obvious one, but still effective.

  2. Offer premium, exclusive content -make your most valuable insights subscriber-only.

  3. Brand partnerships - if your list is highly engaged, advertisers and brands will pay to get in front of your audience.

It’s clear it doesn’t matter if you’re selling products, offering exclusive insights, or partnering with brands, a well-run newsletter can become so much more than a marketing tool - it can be a revenue stream in its own right!

Talking Mental Health

"Talking about it is so important - especially for men." Away from marketing, Jamie opened up about his personal experience with anxiety and burnout. We talked about the challenges of juggling work, life, and wellbeing, and why having the right support systems in place is essential.

Jamie’s biggest piece of advice? Don’t carry everything alone. Whether it’s a friend, co-founder, partner, or therapist, having someone to talk to makes a world of difference. His “backpack” analogy for managing overwhelm - unpacking what’s weighing you down and focusing on what matters most - is simple but powerful.

The Good Stuff, Summed Up

  • Email isn’t dead - it’s thriving.

  • Your list is an owned asset. Build it, nurture it, protect it.

  • Personalisation and segmentation make the difference between annoying and engaging.

  • Newsletters aren’t just updates - they’re opportunities to build real relationships.

  • Mental health matters. Talking about mental health is just as important as talking about strategy.

If there’s one thing to take away, it’s this: email isn’t just another channel - it’s one of the most powerful tools you have to build relationships, grow your audience, and create real business impact.
